Fed: Downer says be careful, Megawti says lift advice

Foreign Minister ALEXANDER DOWNER has reminded Australians to defer travel to Indonesiaas the Indonesian president called on nations to lift warnings keeping tourists away.

The latest travel update says the threat of terrorist attacks still exists in Indonesia, and warns Christmas and New Year are times of special concern.

Terrorists were blamed for a series of bomb blasts in churches around Christmas twoyears ago that killed 18 people and injured more than 100.

Mr DOWNER says the travel advice was reissued on Friday to remind people in Indonesiathat Christmas might be more dangerous this year.

But Indonesian President MEGAWATI SUKARNOPUTRI says Indonesia is not the sole targetof terrorists and people should not be warned off just because her country has been hitin the past.

Meanwhile, Labor foreign affairs spokesman KEVIN RUDD, who wants an inquiry into thetravel advisory system in the wake of the Bali bombings, saying the warnings aren't gettingthrough to travellers.

Mr DOWNER says the travel warnings will be more readily available under initiativesto be announced next year.
